SRCD invites Division 15 members to attend a one-day Equity & Justice Preconference to the Biennial Meetings of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), described below (Philadelphia; Wednesday, March 18, 2015). We are hoping to involve a diverse range of scholars who are interested in sharing ideas about relevant research, methodologies, action, dissemination, and networking… to name only a few of the goals. A brief description is below; a fuller description may (with agenda) be found on the following SRCD webpage (http://www.srcd.org/meetings/biennial-meeting/preconferences-special-events/srcd-preconferences).

The registration fee includes lunch and a reception, and—thanks to funding through SRCD and the W. T. Grant Foundation—the cost is reasonable. Registration is being capped at 100 (and we already have over half the spaces filled) but we are reaching out to beyond SRCD listserves in the hope of involving people with varying perspectives, goals, and experiences. A full agenda may be found here.

Issues of equity and justice—issues such as discrimination, social inequality, educational and health disparities, human rights, equal access, and social exclusion/inclusion—have significant implications for children’s health, well-being and development. In recognition of the central importance of equity and justice and of the role that scientific research can play in addressing them, the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) has organized a Presidential Pre-Conference focused on these issues. The goals of the pre-conference are three-fold:

  1. First, to define, clarify, and synthesize what equity and justice mean in the context of developmental science, and to articulate the advantages that accrue to developmental scientists when they use equity and justice to frame their work.
  2. Second, to share ideas and strategies for conducting research related to equity and justice in developmental science.
  3. Third, to develop and share effective strategies for disseminating relevant research and to facilitate using them to promote programs, practices, and policies to reduce inequities and that provide positive developmental environments for all young people.
