AERA’s Studying and Self-Regulated Learning Special Interest Group is planning its second annual Graduate Student Mentoring Program (GSMP). As part of the mentoring program, students will receive one-on-one mentoring from a scholar with similar interests and expertise.

The program will be held concurrently with the Annual Meeting of AREA in Chicago. The GSMP committee currently consists of Chairs Rayne Sperling ([email protected]) and John Nietfeld ([email protected]), and two additional members of the SIG Graduate Student Committee (Greg Callan & Daniell DiFrancesca).

The primary objective of the SSRL SIG mentoring program is to provide graduate students who are members of AERA and of the SSRL SIG an opportunity to receive mentoring and advice from established scholars in the field, who are also members of the SIG. The SSRL SIG executive board and the GSMP strongly believe that this mentoring program will not only support emerging scholars in their SRL-related research but will also nurture and facilitate professional relationships with current and future leaders in SRL. Ideally, applicants should be doctoral students who are approaching the dissertation phase of their programs. We especially encourage students who plan to graduate in 2016 or 2017 to apply.

Participants must be members of the SIG. Participants will be selected for the Graduate Student Mentoring Program based on research interests, match with participating mentors, and current standing in degree programs. Students interested in participating in the Graduate Student Mentoring Program should submit application materials by February 9, 2015 to Rayne Sperling ([email protected]).

Potential participants should include in their application the following information:

  • A one-page, single-spaced, general summary statement of your research interests
  • A two-page, single-spaced, summary of your current or planned dissertation research, blinded for review, to include the following as is currently known
    • Potential research questions
    • Intended method (Participants, design, materials, procedure)
    • Two challenges and/or questions you currently face or foresee that you will face regarding your dissertation and related research
  • A CV that includes name, address, institution, telephone, fax, e-mail, educational background, awards, professional publications and presentations, teaching experience, and service activities
  • A list of a couple potential faculty mentors outside your institution with whom you would like to be matched. Although we will make every attempt to match you with one of your preferred mentors, securing this match cannot be guaranteed.

Applicants will be reviewed by a designated review committee that will include the GSMP committee members and other members of the SSRL SIG. Participants will be notified by February 15, 2015 regarding acceptance, and if accepted, their designated mentor. The general statement of research interests, the two-page summary provided with the application, and the CV will be shared with the mentor.

Identification of mentors, directions for communication with these mentors, requests for participation in identified SIG events, and other important dates and details will be shared in the acceptance letter for those selected for participation.

Selected participants will gain a unique professional development experience through the GSMP. Participants will receive one-on-one mentoring as well as mentoring and formal opportunities to engage with members of the SSRL SIG community.
