AERA’s Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Special Interest Group (SIG) is currently accepting nominations for elected officer and appointed leadership positions. Service in these positions provides opportunities to advance SIG objectives and to network with researchers and practitioners that share interests in social and emotional learning.

Nominations of others and self-nominations are accepted. All positions span a 3-year terms (as officer-elect, acting, and past) unless otherwise noted. Service entails 3-4 teleconferences per year and attendance at the SEL SIG annual business meeting (held during AERA). The following positions are open for nomination (positions descriptions are included in the following pages):

Nomination Process

All nominees must complete a Nomination Form (see last page) which includes

  • Full name and contact information
  • Institutional affiliation
  • Position of interest
  • A biographical statement (up to 250 words)

ELECTED OFFICER POSITION Desciptions

Chair

General Description: The Chair is responsible for the general administration of the SIG, for ensuring that the SIG Bylaws are followed, and shall act as liaison between the SIG and AERA and the SIG and the SIG Executive Committee.

Specific Responsibilities: Develop agendas for and preside at all meetings of the SIG Executive Committee and the annual SIG business meeting; Assure that minutes for all minutes are distributed; Serve as parliamentarian or appoint a member of the SIG to serve as parliamentarian for each meeting; Approve a panel of reviewers to read and score proposals submitted for the annual meeting; Oversee the nominations process each year, assuring that candidates and their bio sketches are submitted to AERA by its deadline; Provide oversight for the publication of two issues of the SIG newsletter each year; Assure that the SIG website is updated periodically; Oversee selection of a speaker for the annual SIG business meeting; Assure that SIG awards are made in accordance with approved guidelines; Assure that all forms, fees, and other AERA requirements are completed in a timely fashion.

Secretary/Treasurer

General Description: The Secretary-Treasurer is responsible for taking and distributing meeting minutes, maintaining and updating the SIG handbook, and managing the financial accounts of the SIG.

Specific Responsibilities: take and distribute minutes at SEL SIG Annual Business meeting and Executive Committee Meetings; update and maintain SIG Handbook; manage and report on the financial accounts of the SIG, and safe-keeping of all financial documents of the SIG.

Program Chair

General Description: Under the direction of the SEL SIG Executive Committee, the Program Chair has oversight responsibility for the SEL SIG section of the AERA Annual Meeting Program.

Specific Responsibilities: Publishing call for proposals for SIG-sponsored presentations at the AERA annual meeting; recruiting reviewers; providing oversight to the online proposal submission, review, and selection process; communicating in a timely fashion with members who submit proposals regarding the status of their proposals; creating annual meeting sessions based on selected proposals; plan Annual Business Meeting with Executive Committee; coordinate selection of Student Award process and recipient; attend annual meeting and all sessions; prepare reports for Business Meeting.

Student Representative

General Description: Under the direction of the SEL SIG Executive Committee, the Student Representative has oversight responsibility for connecting with fellow students and managing student involvement within the SEL SIG. The student representative, and student rep-elect are involved with assisting the Executive Committee plan the annual meeting, and represent the student voice within the SEL SIG-i.e., within the newsletter and annual meeting.

Specific Responsibilities: recruit student members and maintain communication with them; increase student involvement and encourage attendance at annual meeting; work with Executive Committee on the Graduate Student Award policies and procedures; participate in the Executive Committee Meetings as requested.

APPOINTED LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

Membership Chair

General Description: Under the direction of the SEL SIG Executive Committee, the Membership Chair has oversight responsibility for SEL SIG membership.

Specific Responsibilities: Work with Program Chair and other identified members of the Executive Committee to recruit new members at the SEL SIG annual business meeting at AERA and through other dissemination channels (e.g., SRCD); implement focused recruitment strategies in order to obtain a diverse and international representative group of SEL SIG members that includes individuals that represent both SEL research and practice in the field; maintain membership list and provide updates to Executive Committee on membership numbers; work with members to keep membership status current; not a voting member of the Executive Committee, but participate in Executive Committee meetings as requested.

Communications Chair

General Description: Under the direction of the SEL SIG Executive Committee, the Communications Chair has oversight responsibility for use of the principal vehicles used to communicate with SIG members—i.e., the newsletter, the website, and the listserv.

Specific Responsibilities: coordination of SEL Advances newsletter including working with the editor to: determine content and publication schedule and soliciting, review and edit contributions; and publish online; develop, update, and ready for posting website content (working with webmaster); communicate announcements and postings to members vis-à-vis list serve; coordinate updating of SEL SIG Handbook with the Secretary-Treasurer and the Executive Committee; schedule and coordinate Executive Committee meetings; not a voting member of the Executive Committee, but participate in Executive Committee meetings as requested.

Newsletter Editor

The Newsletter Editor shall, in coordination with the Communications Chair, assume responsibility for planning, soliciting and editing articles for and working with a designer in publishing and distributing a newsletter to SIG members at least twice a year—once in the late winter prior to the Annual Meeting and again in early summer after the Annual Meeting.

Webmaster

The Webmaster shall in coordination with the Communications Chair post and update timely information of interest to SIG members on the SIG website, including information about membership, contact information on SIG officers, current and archived editions of the SIG newsletter, information about submitting proposals for the annual meeting, minutes and agendas for the annual business meeting, information about the SIG listserv, and other announcements.
