Deadline: October 31, 2018

Nominations are sought for the inaugural Advocacy Coordinating Committee (ACC). The ACC will consist of at least 12 members serving staggered 3-year terms. All terms on the ACC will begin on January 1, 2019. Nominations may originate from individuals (including self-nominations), APA boards and committees, divisions, and state, provincial and territorial psychological associations (SPTAs).

Committee Mission

In August of 2018, the APA Council of Representatives approved a proposal to integrate the advocacy efforts of APA and its new expanded companion 501(c)6 organization, now known as APA Services Inc. The goal of the integration is to benefit members and to seamlessly address the broad range of opportunities and challenges facing the discipline and profession of psychology. In approving this proposal in August 2018, the Council specifically acknowledged the recommendations of the Presidential Work Group on an Expanded APA Advocacy Model that an ACC be constituted that would be responsible for evaluating and setting annual advocacy priorities with respect to impact on both the discipline of psychology and the professions of psychologists in scientific, educational, public interest, health service practice and applied practice settings.  Within APA’s newly integrated c3/c6 advocacy model, the ACC will be responsible for developing a highly inclusive and transparent input process that recognizes the importance of both long-term goals and the need for agility in carrying out advocacy priorities in a fast-paced political environment.

Nominee Qualifications

The Board of Directors is seeking a balanced ACC that broadly represents all aspects of APA’s diverse membership including disciplinary focus, demographic diversity, diversity of career stage (including student membership) and various employment settings. Policy or advocacy experience, as well as experience in APA governance, divisions and/or SPTAs, are desired.  Members of the APA Council of Representatives are eligible to serve concurrently on the ACC, but members of other APA and APASI boards and committees may not serve concurrently on the ACC.

It is anticipated that the committee will have two in-person meetings in Washington, DC, and monthly virtual meetings.  ACC members may also be invited to attend APA’s advocacy events over the course of their term on the committee.  ACC members are encouraged to keep abreast of significant advocacy developments and initiatives through the review of periodic updates.
