Elsevier is now seeking candidates for the position of Senior Editor for its journal, Contemporary Educational Psychology (CEP). The Senior Editor’s primary responsibilities will include appointing an Editorial Team (Associate Editors, Editorial Board Members, and Editorial Assistants) to work directly with journal management, contribute to the scope and mission of the journal, evaluate all submissions to determine suitability, and support the Editorial Team in all aspects of the review process. Appointment as incoming Senior Editor will begin on January 1, 2021, with a one-year transition with the outgoing Senior Editor. Applications are due by September 1, 2020.
Mission: CEP publishes articles that report empirical studies that involve the application of psychological theory and science to the educational process. Of particular relevance are descriptions of empirical research designed to either explicate or enhance the educational theories and processes. The journal places great value on the quality of research methodology. The journal publishes quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and single-subject design studies that involve the application of psychological science to an important educational process, issue, or problem.
Qualifications: Key qualities sought for the position of Senior Editor include a record of scholarship conducting original research in the psychology and science of education; editorial experience and organizational skills to oversee the editorial process and meet deadlines; ability to work effectively with the Associate Editors, Editorial Board, reviewers, authors, and others involved in the publication process, and exemplary written and oral communication skills. The ability to articulate a compelling vision for the journal is also essential. The Senior Editor is expected to have sufficient time and resources to devote to editorial duties. Given these qualities, Elsevier requires that the Senior Editor of CEP hold the rank of Full Professor or its equivalent from a fully accredited institution of higher learning. Elsevier also prefers that the Senior Editor has had past service on the CEP Editorial Board. It is critical that the Senior Editor has a history of publishing in CEP, prior involvement in the review process, and familiarity with the journal.
Responsibilities: Major responsibilities of the Senior Editor include advancing the journal’s mission, recruiting sufficiently high quality manuscripts for a high impact journal; developing a diverse and well-qualified Editorial Board; maintaining the timeliness and quality of the review process with the aid of Associate Editors and Editorial Assistants; working with the Editorial Team and Elsevier management to refine or set policies regarding the journal (e.g., orchestrating procedures for soliciting manuscripts and proposals for special issues in areas of high need); and, strengthening CEP’s reputation as a high impact journal in the field of educational and psychological research. The senior editor will also convene and lead an annual meeting of the editorial board.
