Calling on teacher educators to disseminate opportunity to U.S. preservice teachers. Online survey about instructional and assessment decisions, follow-up interview for some participants. $30 gift card for participating.

I am writing to ask you to take part in a study examining instructional and assessment decisions of preservice teachers. My name is Dustin Van Orman and I am a doctoral student under the supervision of two faculty members at Washington State University (Drs. Chad Gotch and Kira Carbonneau).

You are receiving this message because you are either thinking about becoming a teacher or you are in an elementary teacher preparation program on your way to becoming a teacher. I am seeking 150 prospective and preservice teachers at different stages in their program to participate. If you choose to participate, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your own teaching and you will receive a $30 gift card for your time in completing the study. Results from this research may help world-wide teacher preparation programs and schools enhance their use of best practices and support better educational experiences for students. The research study will be two parts:

Part I: Questionnaire & Instructional/Assessment Dilemmas (2 hr. online Qualtrics survey)

In the first part of this research, you will respond to questions describing you (e.g., age, your teaching/assessment experiences), then you will read and respond to three dilemmas of instructional and assessment practice. Questions will ask you to make decisions and to describe your rationale in specific classroom circumstances. Your stage in the program and responses to dilemmas will be used to determine whether we meet for a follow-up 45-minute interview on Zoom approximately one week later.

Part II: Interview (45 minutes on Zoom)

If you are invited to do an interview, I will ask you to talk about your teaching and assessment philosophies and we will discuss specific instructional/assessment moves you wrote about when responding to dilemmas. I will record this conversation and return a transcript for you to verify and clarify anything if there is a need.

Your responses in this study will made anonymous upon data collection and will not be evaluated in any way. There are no consequences to your coursework or field evaluations for participating. You can sign up for the research using this link by providing your name and email address: https://wsu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cA3o77gShwk5bed

Thank you for your consideration!
