Our team at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence has developed the Student Emotion Regulation Assessment (SERA) to help educators better understand and support their students’ emotion regulation skills. The SERA is a computer-based situational judgment test with versions for grades 1-5 (SERA-P) and grades 6-12 (SERA-S).

To score the assessment, we need expert ratings of the helpfulness of each response item both for feeling better in the moment and for long-term well-being. This is where you come in.

Who is eligible to be an expert rater?

We are looking for professionals with knowledge of healthy emotion regulation strategies for children and youth between the ages of 6 and 18 years. This includes researchers and professors with expertise in children’s emotion regulation, clinical child psychologists, school psychologists, and education or youth services practitioners/specialists with expertise in social-emotional learning. To participate as an expert rater, you must be at least 18 years old.

What are you asking me to do?

If you are interested in being an expert rater, please complete our brief online interest form by November 15th. The interest form begins with an online informed consent form that provides more details about this study. You can access the form here or by copying and pasting this URL into your web browser:

The interest form should take less than 10 minutes to complete. Please plan to complete it in one sitting.

If you are selected to be an expert rater, we will invite you to provide your ratings via an online survey which should take about 30 – 60 minutes. How long it takes will depend on whether you rate one or both versions of the SERA (i.e., the SERA-P and/or SERA-S). You will have the option to rate only one version even if your expertise spans both grade ranges.

Will I receive compensation for my time?

We know you are very busy. As a gesture of appreciation, we are offering a $50 Amazon e-gift card for each version of the SERA that you rate. If you rate both versions, you will receive a $100 Amazon e-gift card.

We hope you will participate!
