Theory into Practice (TIP) is calling for submissions for a special issue titled, “Creative Arts, Physical Activity, and Children’s Play in Early Childhood.” TIP is published quarterly by Taylor & Francis, and only publishes special thematic issues. All articles are written about applications of theory and research to practice. TIP does not publish original empirical studies. The articles are relatively short compared with other journals. Additional information about TIP can be found here: https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/htip20/current

Overview:
In recent years, teachers and school administrators report increased pressure for teaching academic skills. Although precise measures, texts, and mandated curricula differ across countries, states, and school districts, some schools and early childhood programs have reduced or eliminated activity periods (e.g., recess), art instruction, music instruction, and/or physical education for children who are 3- to 8-years-old. This special issue will provide information based on research about whether art education, physical education, music education, or play benefit or take away time from children’s academic achievement and/or motivation to learn. What follows are possible questions that can be addressed in articles for this issue (although we will consider manuscripts addressing other related topics):
• What types of play experiences enhance young children’s socioemotional skills?
• What are best practices for art-inclusion and/or play-based activities in the classroom or
child-care center?
• Does the inclusion of activity periods (e.g., recess) influence children’s learning during
the school day? Does it matter how many or how much time is devoted to these
activities?
• Does giving children choices during the school day enhance their motivation to learn?
• What is the role of professional training in the creative arts or physical education for
teachers who work with young children?
• Is there evidence that the implementation of arts-integrated instruction benefits young
children’s learning?
• What are some innovative, evidence-based practices that could be implemented to
enhance young children’s learning?
We invite potential authors to submit a one-page article proposal that includes the following: (a) proposed title of the manuscript and names and affiliations of authors; (b) brief description of the specific topic that will be addressed; (c) brief description of a summary of what the research actually says about this topic, and (d) examples of recommendations, particularly for practitioners and policymakers.
Before submitting a proposal, please be aware of these guidelines for articles published in TIP:
• Manuscripts generally contain between,4500-5000 words, with 5000 being the limit.
• TIP does not publish empirical studies; all TIP articles are summative and are based on
reviews of previously published studies.
• At the end of each article, all authors are asked to provide a brief list of additional
resources for classroom use.
• All articles must be written in APA format, 7th Edition.
