Induction Support for Beginning Teachers
An APA Division 15 Policy Brief
Grounded in educational psychology, policy, and leadership research, this brief builds on evidence that strong induction programs can help novice teachers build confidence, improve instructional practice, strengthen professional belonging, and remain in the profession. However, early-career educators often enter schools while navigating stress, burnout, challenging working conditions, and uneven access to support, all of which contribute to high rates of teacher turnover within the first five years of entering the profession. The brief highlights the importance of helping novice teachers survive and thrive through comprehensive induction that integrates instructional coaching, supportive mentoring, and sustainable professional learning communities.
