PROGRAM DETAILS

Thank you for your interest in the Network for Invivo Education Research (NIER) AERA Workshop. This workshop is an element of the research and partnerships plan within the NSF-funded project, Development, Implementation, and Assessment of Mathematics Interventions at Scale:  An Incubator Project, PI Prasad Ram, Co-PI Teomara (Teya) Rutherford, and Co-PI Jessica Hunt (Award #2243797).

Rich and detailed data can provide insight into areas such as mathematical learning, motivation, self-regulation,  engagement, and identity as students interact with educational technology.  But, this data can be complex and messy!  The purpose of this program is to introduce PhD students to the NIER learning community. Specifically, we aim to center students’ experiences, knowledge, and interests in the NIER platform development.  Participants will gain experience in the ideation, design, and development of learning platforms and infrastructure to support research and practice along with connections and community with a multidisciplinary groups of peers working at the intersection of the Learning Sciences, Educational Psychology, STEM Education, Mathematics Education, Educational Technology, Computer Science, Human Computer Interaction, and Informatics.

This half-day workshop will take place the day before the 2024 AERA conference in Philadelphia, PA.  It will involve whole-group and small group interactions with the PI team, project staff, and other participants.  Experiences during the meeting include demonstrations, discussion, and breakout group sessions.  Selected participants must be available to attend the scheduled meeting and will also be expected to work with other graduate student participants in 1-3 virtual follow up conversations beyond this workshop.  Follow up conversations will be one hour in length and will focus on further articulation of possible design aspects of the platform that would most benefit graduate student and/or early career researchers.

Fellows will receive a $250 stipend for the half-day workshop to support their participation.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Applicants should be current PhD students in at least their second year of study. Students who plan to graduate between June, 2024 and August, 2024 may also apply.

Applicants can be from any related field, including Learning Sciences, Educational Psychology, other Psychology fields, STEM Education, Mathematics Education, Educational Technology, Computer Science, Human Computer Interaction, and Informatics.

Eleven participants will be selected based on individual criteria and also with consideration of the cohort formed–with the goal to form a cohort with complementary skills, knowledge, and experiences. Selection criteria will include experience with and interest in learning technologies, mathematics education; statistics, data science, and learning analytics skills and experience; and expressed interest in the NIER project, included in the applicant’s statement. Applicants who are representative of  will receive priority.

TO APPLY– APPLICATIONS ARE DUE JANUARY 31, 2024.

Complete this Qualtrics form and upload (within the form) the following elements:

  1. Applicant’s CV
  2. A 250 word statement of interest including a description of at least one research project that you have either participated in or would like to participate in.  Explain how this process would work, what collaborations would be involved, and what technologies would help in the project.

The application deadline is January 31st, 2024.

Final decisions will be released by February 29th, 2024.  A waitlist may be maintained through one week before the start of the program.
