The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) has announced the full list of 40 FY2014 Graduate Psychology Education Program (GPE) grantees, including 24 new GPE grants and 16 non-competing renewals. After receiving a significant increase for the GPE program in January, HRSA decided to award the 2014 GPE funds to applicants who were approved for funding in FY2013 but did not receive a grant due to insufficient funds. The new grants went to universities and health care institutions to train psychologists working with other health professions in the provision of health care services to underserved populations such as older adults, children, the chronically ill, victims of abuse and trauma including veterans and their families, unemployed persons, and victims of natural disasters.
Established in 2002, GPE is the nation’s only federal program dedicated solely to the education and training of doctoral-level psychologists. The GPE program provides grants to APA-accredited psychology doctoral, internship and postdoctoral training programs. An exemplary “two for one” federal activity, the program supports the interprofessional training of psychology graduate students while they provide supervised mental and behavioral health services in rural and urban underserved communities, thus increasing the capacity of their clinical settings to provide services to underserved populations.
