Proposal submission deadline: May 21, 2021
The journal Psychology of Men & Masculinities invites manuscripts for a special issue entitled Research Syntheses in the Psychology of Men and Masculinities. More information about our journal can be found here: https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/men/?tab=2
Specifically, the guest editors are interested in meta-analyses and qualitative meta-syntheses that are based on systematic reviews pertaining to the psychology of men and masculinities, which is the study of how boys’ and men’s lives are connected to both gender and sex as well as the cultural and individual meanings associated with boys and men.
The field encompasses the social construction of gender, sex differences and similarities, and biological processes. We are interested in meta-analyses and qualitative meta-syntheses that address both applied specialties (e.g., clinical, counseling, school, health, and I/O psychology) and foundational areas (e.g., social, personality, developmental, cognitive, and biological psychology). We also welcome submissions from other social science disciplines, such as social work, sociology, public health, and media science.
This special issue seeks to highlight the role that research syntheses (meta-analyses and qualitative meta-syntheses) can play in fostering the development of new theories, testing existing theories, testing the effectiveness of interventions, describing patterns of relationships, and comprehensively describing a particular phenomenon relevant to boys, men and masculinities.
Examples of research questions to address in this special issue include:
- The effectiveness of interventions and programs for boys and men
- The association between gender/masculinity variables and other outcomes (e.g., academic outcomes, relationship satisfaction, physical health, etc.)
- Group differences, such as gender differences and differences among men from diverse racial backgrounds
- Boys’ and men’s experiences of a particular phenomenon relevant to the psychology of men and masculinities
- Boys’ and men’s perceptions of pertinent social issues
Authors are invited to submit proposals for this special issue via email to the guest editors at Jeff Valentine and Joel Wong by May 21, 2021.
The proposal should include a list of proposed authors and their roles and an abstract of no more than 1,000 words so that early feedback and guidance can be provided prior to the development of a full manuscript. The proposal should describe in detail the proposed methods of the study, including adherence to best practices in meta-analyses or meta-syntheses as well as the sources and search terms that the authors will use in locating studies for their meta-analysis or meta-synthesis.
Authors will be informed of the status of their proposal within a few weeks. An invitation to submit a full manuscript does not guarantee acceptance of the manuscript. All manuscripts will be subject to peer review.
Full manuscripts should be submitted through the journal’s website by December 31, 2021.
We also invite you to consider submitting regular manuscripts to our journal on topics related to gender, sex, and masculinities. Please refer to our call for papers: https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/men/call-for-papers
